Why You Should Visit Seoul in the Fall

Seoul in autumn is a different city from the humid summer version — the air cools to a perfect 15-20°C, the ginkgo trees along Deoksugung Stonewall Road turn electric yellow, and the mountains ringing the city blaze with red maples that make New England's fall foliage look subtle. October and November are the sweet spot: clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and a city that feels like it was designed for long walks.

The fall foliage peaks in late October to mid-November, and the best viewing happens inside the city limits. Changdeokgung Palace's Secret Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage site, becomes a corridor of red and gold that visitors can only enter with a guided tour — the limited numbers mean you experience it without the summer crowds. Bukhansan National Park, accessible by subway, offers hiking through forests that glow amber at every elevation.

The food scene intensifies in autumn. Korean cuisine is seasonal, and fall brings the best of it: freshly harvested rice, persimmons, roasted chestnuts from street vendors, and tteok (rice cake) varieties that only appear in cooler months. Gwangjang Market's mayak gimbap (addictive mini rice rolls) and bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) taste even better when the market's steam clouds meet cool air. Itaewon and Hannam-dong are the neighborhoods for the design-forward, internationally-influenced side of Seoul. Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is world-class, the boutiques along Itaewon Antique Street sell mid-century Korean and Japanese furniture, and the coffee scene — Felt Coffee, Fritz Coffee Company, Center Coffee — is among the most serious in Asia.

Korean barbecue in fall hits different. The charcoal grills and the cooler weather create the ideal pairing — samgyeopsal (pork belly) at Mapo Galmaegi in Mapo-gu, beef brisket at Maple Tree House in Itaewon, and the full-spread Korean BBQ experience at Jongno's Seorae Galmaegi. Pair it with soju and makgeolli (rice wine) and close the night in Hongdae's bar district, which runs until dawn.

Seoul is also one of Asia's most affordable major capitals. A subway ride is 1,250 won ($0.95), street food meals cost 3,000-8,000 won ($2.25-6.00), and hotel rooms in boutique properties like Hotel28 Myeongdong and Glad Live Gangnam run 80,000-150,000 won ($60-115). The combination of world-class culture, food, and affordability makes fall in Seoul one of the best-value trips in Asia.
