Dubrovnik's old town became globally famous as the filming location for King's Landing, but reducing this city to a TV backdrop misses the point entirely. The walled city on Croatia's southern Adriatic coast has centuries of history as a maritime republic that rivaled Venice, and its cultural identity runs far deeper than any HBO production.
Walk the city walls for the definitive Dubrovnik experience. The 1.2-mile circuit takes roughly 90 minutes and delivers views of terracotta rooftops, the crystalline Adriatic, and the island of Lokrum just offshore. Go early in the morning — by 10 AM the walls get crowded and the sun becomes punishing in summer months.
The food scene has matured significantly beyond tourist-trap seafood restaurants. Restaurant 360, set in the old town's fortress walls, holds a Michelin star and serves contemporary Croatian cuisine with an emphasis on Adriatic fish and local olive oils.
