How to Travel Light With a Suit, Gym Gear, and Casual Wear

Packing a suit, gym clothes, and casual wear into a single carry-on is the ultimate test of packing discipline. Business travelers, wedding guests, and anyone attending a mix of events knows the challenge — you need to look sharp, stay active, and dress comfortably, all from one bag that fits in an overhead bin.

Start by choosing a suit that does double duty. A navy or charcoal suit in a wrinkle-resistant fabric from SuitSupply or Spier and Mackay works for formal events, and the trousers pair with a casual button-down or polo for less dressy occasions. One suit that covers two wardrobe tiers immediately reduces what you need to pack.

Gym gear compresses better than anything else in your bag. Two sets of workout clothes — shorts, shirts, and merino wool socks — roll into a space smaller than a paperback book. Lululemon's Pace Breaker shorts and Metal Vent Tech shirts pack flat and dry quickly when hand-washed. A jump rope or resistance bands take up negligible space and provide a full workout anywhere.

Shoes are the bottleneck. Three pairs maximum: dress shoes or clean leather boots, training shoes, and casual sneakers. Wear the bulkiest pair — training shoes — on the plane. Pack the dress shoes in shoe bags along the edges of the suitcase. If your casual sneakers are clean enough for both daytime exploring and a casual dinner, you can drop to two pairs and recover significant bag space.

Layer your casual wardrobe around versatile pieces. A navy crewneck sweater works over a dress shirt for a smart-casual look and over a t-shirt for sightseeing. Two t-shirts, one button-down, and one pair of chinos handle every casual situation. Merino wool fabrics from Wool and Prince or Outlier resist odor and can be worn multiple times between washes, which is the single best packing hack for extended trips.

Use the garment folder method for the suit. Place the jacket inside-out with shoulders nested, lay the trousers on top folded along the crease, and wrap the entire package in a garment folder or large packing cube. Position this flat at the top of your bag with nothing pressing on it. Steam or hang immediately upon arrival and the creases will drop out within an hour.
