How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Packing light isn't about sacrifice — it's about strategy. A travel capsule wardrobe means bringing fewer pieces that all work together, so you look put-together every day without checking a bag. The goal is roughly 10 to 12 items that cover dining, sightseeing, nightlife, and anything in between.

Start with a neutral color base. Two or three bottoms in navy, charcoal, or khaki pair with almost anything. Lululemon ABC pants work for both a nice dinner and a long walking day. A pair of slim chinos from Bonobos or J.Crew rounds out the rotation. Avoid white pants unless you enjoy doing laundry on vacation.

Layer strategically with three to four tops. Two solid-colored crew neck tees from Buck Mason or Sunspel handle daytime. A linen button-down works open over a tee or buttoned up for a restaurant. Add a lightweight merino wool sweater — Uniqlo's Extra Fine Merino line packs flat and resists wrinkles and odor better than cotton.

One versatile jacket ties everything together. An unlined cotton or nylon bomber from Alpha Industries works in most temperate climates. For warmer destinations, swap it for an overshirt from Portuguese Flannel or Taylor Stitch that functions as both a light layer and a standalone top.

Footwear is where most guys overpack. You need two pairs maximum — a clean white leather sneaker like Common Projects or Koio for daily wear, and one dressier option. Blundstone Chelsea boots bridge the gap between casual and smart without taking up much luggage space. Break both pairs in before the trip.

Accessories and underwear round it out. Merino wool boxer briefs from Icebreaker or Smartwool can be worn multiple days or hand-washed and dried overnight. Pack a single belt, a pair of sunglasses, and a packable hat if you're heading somewhere sunny. Everything should fit in a carry-on like the Away Bigger Carry-On.
