Your Face Wash Is Wrong and Here's Why

The average guy's face wash routine involves whatever bar soap is near the sink, applied aggressively with hot water until the skin feels tight. That tightness isn't cleanliness — it's your skin barrier screaming. A stripped barrier overproduces oil to compensate, which is why your face feels clean for an hour and greasy by lunch.
Bar soap is the worst thing you can put on your face. Most bar soaps have a pH between 9 and 11, while healthy skin sits at a pH of around 4.5 to 5.5. That alkaline assault disrupts the acid mantle — your skin's natural protective layer — and creates an environment where acne-causing bacteria thrive. Switch to a face-specific cleanser with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5.
For oily and acne-prone skin, a salicylic acid cleanser is the gold standard. CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser and Paula's Choice Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser both contain salicylic acid at effective concentrations that dissolve excess oil and dead skin cells inside the pore. Use once daily — typically at night — to avoid over-exfoliation.
Dry and sensitive skin needs a cream or milk cleanser that adds hydration while removing dirt. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser and Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser are fragrance-free, sulfate-free, and gentle enough for twice-daily use. If your skin feels tight or dry after washing, your cleanser is too harsh — full stop.
Water temperature matters. Hot water strips oils and weakens capillaries near the surface, contributing to redness. Lukewarm water — comfortable to the touch but not steamy — is correct for cleansing. Cold water won't effectively dissolve oil and product residue. The Goldilocks temperature is what you want, and it takes intention because most guys default to too hot.
Wash your face twice a day — morning and night — and resist the urge to wash more frequently, even if you feel oily midday. Over-washing triggers the rebound oil production cycle. If you need a midday refresh, blotting papers from Clean and Clear or a thermal water spray from Avène handle the situation without disrupting your skin's equilibrium.
