How to Build a Skincare Routine from Scratch

Starting a skincare routine from zero is simpler than the internet makes it look. You don't need 10 products, a dermatology degree, or a 30-minute morning ritual. Three products — a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen — are the foundation. Everything else is optional and should be added one item at a time over weeks, not all at once.

Step one is finding the right cleanser for your skin type. Oily or acne-prone skin benefits from a foaming or gel cleanser with salicylic acid — CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser is the standard recommendation. Dry or sensitive skin needs a cream or hydrating cleanser — CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser or Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser. Use it morning and night with lukewarm water.

Step two is moisturizer. Every skin type needs hydration — even oily skin. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream works universally. Neutrogena Hydro Boost is better for oily skin. Apply a nickel-sized amount to slightly damp skin after cleansing, extending to your neck. This step takes 15 seconds and is the single most impactful thing you can do for your skin's daily health.

Step three is sunscreen every morning. SPF 30 minimum, broad-spectrum, applied as the last step of your morning routine. EltaMD UV Daily, Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, or La Roche-Posay Anthelios are all excellent options that don't feel heavy or leave a white cast. This step prevents the UV damage that causes the majority of visible aging.

After two to four weeks with the basics, add one active ingredient. For acne or large pores, add a niacinamide serum like The Ordinary Niacinamide 10%. For anti-aging, add a retinol product starting at 0.25 percent, two nights per week. For dark spots or dullness, add a vitamin C serum in the morning. Only add one new product at a time and wait two weeks before introducing another.

The complete beginner routine takes under five minutes and costs less than 50 dollars for all three core products. Morning: cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen. Night: cleanse, apply active if using one, moisturize. Consistency matters more than complexity — a simple routine done daily produces better results than an elaborate routine done sporadically. Start today, keep it simple, and build from there.
