The DJ Set You're Sleeping On

Jayda G Boiler Room set from 2019 is still one of the most electrifying pieces of recorded live music on the internet. The Canadian-born, Berlin-based DJ and producer delivers 90 minutes of eclectic, joyous house and disco that builds from deep grooves to full-room euphoria.

Boiler Room began in 2010 in a Dalston warehouse with a webcam taped to a wall, which is why the format looks the way it does. One camera behind the decks, the crowd pressed in on three sides, no stage. The trade-off is that you are watching a room rather than a performance, and the best sets are the ones where the DJ is clearly playing to the forty people in front of them, not the two million who watch later.

What makes the set special is Jayda G visible joy. She dances behind the decks with an abandon that is infectious, singing along to her own transitions and responding to the crowd with genuine excitement.

The track selection ranges from vintage Chicago house and Detroit techno to obscure disco edits and her own productions. The transitions are technically clean but never clinical.

The environmental streak is not an affectation. Jayda Guy holds a masters in resource and environmental management and her research covered chemical contamination in killer whales. Significant Changes, her 2019 album on Ninja Tune, is built partly around orca recordings from that work. She finished the degree while the DJ career was already taking off.

Jayda G brings a musicologist knowledge to the booth. She gravitates toward records with messages of unity, environmentalism, and collective joy, which gives the set thematic coherence.

The Boiler Room format captures the energy of the room in a way that studio mixes cannot. You can see individual audience members catching a groove and hear the collective response.

Play it loud or do not bother. The Boiler Room feed blends the soundboard with room mics, so the crowd sits inside the mix rather than on top of it, and laptop speakers throw away the low end the whole thing is built on. Headphones work. A decent speaker works better. Treat the ninety minutes as one block rather than skipping through, because the climb from deep house to full disco is the argument being made.

One honest caveat. Boiler Room is a genre now, and a lot of the catalogue is somebody staring at a laptop while a crowd films them on phones. Most are not worth ninety minutes. This one is, and the difference is that Jayda G spends the set looking at the room, not the screen.
